Rachael puts the brake on Joshna’s run

KUALA LUMPUR: Qualifier Joshna Chinappa’s gallant run in the Tournament of Champions squash championships in New York ended at the hands of fifth seed Rachael Grinham of Australia in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

Joshna, who upset second seed and fellow Indian Dipika Pallikal in the first round on Monday, gave a good fight to 36-year-old Rachael before losing 11-8, 9-11, 4-11, 8-11.

Rachael will face her younger sister and fourth seed Natalie Grinham of Holland in the semi-finals. Natalie also came back from a set down to beat eighth seed Sarah Kippax of England 10-12, 11-5, 11-4, 11-6.

The other semi-final is between top seed Madeline Perry of Ireland and third seed Kasey Brown of Australia.

In the men’s competition, third seed Gregory Gaultier of France was made to slog for 79 minutes by sixth seed Mohamed El Shorbagy of Egypt before advancing to the semi-finals.

Gaultier won 11-9, 13-11, 13-15, 11-4 and will face second seed Nick Matthew of England for a place in the final.

Matthew, the world champion, defeated seventh seed Karim Darwish of Egypt 11-5, 11-7, 11-8 in 43 minutes.
