Mardan stretches lead in Sabah Masters third round

PETALING JAYA: Singapore golfer Mardan Mamat strengthened his grip on the Sabah Masters after carding a two-under 69 for a four-shot lead in the third round at the Sutera Harbour Golf and Country Club in Kota Kinabalu.

Mardan, who shot a 67 and 66 in the first two rounds, has a three-round 11-under 202 total.

Malaysia’s Nicholas Fung, competing in his home ground, and Somkiat Srisanga of Thailand are joint second on 206 after shooting identical 69s. Nicholas’ round puts him on course to be crowned the Asean PGA Tour Order of Merit champion today.

The Sabah Masters is the final Asean Tour event for the 2012-2013 season.

First-round joint leader Antonio Lascuna of the Philippines carded an even-71 to lie five strokes behind the leader in fourth place.

Defending champion Wisut Artjanawat of Thailand returned a 70 and is 10 strokes behind Mardan. Mardan, who has led the tournament from day one, is fancied to triumph today, although he admitted that it would be difficult to maintain his focus.

“I made a few mistakes on the back nine but managed to hang in there and finish even par (35) on the back. It’s hard to concentrate for four-and-a-half hours every day. I made a few bad decisions,” he said.
