TOKYO: Marion Bartoli of France defeated local hope Kimiko Date-Krumm 6-1, 6-4 to reach the second round of the Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament in Japan on Monday.

The 27-year-old, seeded ninth, dominated the match from the start with a series of powerful strokes, taking a 5-0 lead in the first before beating the veteran Japanese in straight sets.

Date-Krumm made a go of it in the second set, fighting back from 0-2 down to make it 3-3, but a fifth double fault in the seventh game and two further unforced errors later in the set gave victory to Bartoli.
