IT WAS a heartening representation of Malaysia Day when hundreds of people from various background thronged Jalan Sultan and Jalan Petaling in Kuala Lumpur to show their love for the country’s ancient structures and cultural heritage.
More than 250 artistes sang, danced and recited poetry to the enthusiastic crowd, using the century-old buildings as beautiful backdrop to remind everyone of their relevance no matter how fast and far the country has progressed.
The mural in Jalan Sultan painted last year by about 60 artists under a heritage preservation effort initiated by The Star, was repaired in time for the occasion after it was vandalised.
The Petaling Street Community Art Project made up of volunteers from different fields organised the event titled “A Century of Moonlight in Petaling Street Community”.
Amid dragon dance and the scent of candles reminiscent of the old-fashioned way of celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival, attendees were brought on a historical and cultural tour through several landmarks in the area, holding lanterns in their hands.
They were brought to admire the beauty of Old China Cafe, Jalan Panggung that was once called the Culture Street, GuanDi Temple and other time-honoured but forgotten buildings.
“I pass by this area once in a while, but I never know the historical significance behind the buildings. This is a meaningful occasion, it is a great exposure,” enthused psychology student Low Joo Kei, 20, who was there with eight other family members.
The event was also attended by Bukit Bintang MP Fong Kui Lun, special officer to Deputy Minister of Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Datuk M. Saravanan, Datuk Chan Kim Leong and Kuala Lumpur Hawkers and Petty Traders’ Association vice president Datuk Ang Say Tee.
Chan said he agreed to Fong’s call to repaint the buildings in Jalan Petaling and Jalan Sultan and pledged that he would find ways to get it done.
