‘Bola Kampung’ stars join PJ Half Marathon

FOOTBALLERS Iwan, Sabok and Azeizul of animation series Bola Kampung are gearing up for the challenge of a lifetime — the trio will be taking part in the PJ Half Marathon on Sept 30.

The run promises to be bigger this time as some 10,000 people are expected to sign up for the 25th anniversary half marathon and the race will also benefit charities.

Iwan, Sabok and Azeizul, who are well-known faces among teenagers, will lead the crowd in the warm-up session and keep them entertained at the Petaling Jaya Stadium in Kelana Jaya.

Petaling Jaya mayor Datuk Mohamad Roslan Sakiman said he was looking forward to the Bola Kampung football trio at the PJ Half Marathon.

“I believe it will be a lot of fun, and an excellent way to kick off what will undoubtedly be a brilliant event for PJ City. This trio reminds me of the times I kicked around a football in my hometown of Kampung Bukit Bangkong in Sepang.”

Animasia Studio’s managing director Edmund Chan said the studio was glad to be part of the PJ Half Marathon as the race had become an annual event for the community and the studio’s animated characters mirrored the people who kept themselves active.

Animasia Studios will also bring in a 9.5m-tall inflatable animated character of Iwan that will be placed in the centre of the stadium, where it will vie for an entry in the Malaysia Book of Records.

There will also be a dunking game to lend a carnival air to the event.

Chan said the Bola Kampung animation series was launched in 2006 and so far, six seasons comprising 78 episodes, had been aired.

“After having focused on the adventures of Iwan and friends for six years, it is time to expand the series into a movie. The movie will hopefully elevate the standards of local animation productions and attract international interest in Malaysia’s diverse culture and traditions,” he said.

He added that Bola Kampung The Movie has a fantasy-themed story line that has even captured the imagination of adults.

The TV series has garnered a huge following among young viewers due to its storyline about a group of boys in the fictional village of Gong Lechar and how they achieve their dreams to become football stars.

Besides being aired on RTM, Disney Channel (Astro Ch 615) and Cartoon Network (Astro Ch 616), the heart-warming series has put Malaysia on the international map as it is broadcast in more than 16 countries, including Vietnam, Thailand and Turkey.

The series was created by Animasia Studio chief operating officer Wong Kuan Loong (aka Ah Loong).

The PJ Half Marathon, offering a total cash purse of RM36,200, is open to Malaysians, permanent residents and foreigners with a valid work permit.
