RM1.3mil for flood prevention

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Baru Central Municipal Council (MPJBT) has allocated RM1.3mil to improve the drainage system to prevent floods in Johor Jaya.

The projects will involve the widening and deepening of the drains, will be carried out along Jalan Bakawali 91 and Jalan Ros Merah Utama.

Johor Jaya assemblyman Tan Cher Puk said for a start, the work would be carried out along Jalan Bakawali 91 first beginning Aug 27.

“As this will involve the closing of the roads, we will study the traffic situation before the project in Jalan Ros Merah Utama is carried out,” he said, adding that the project along Jalan Bakawali, was expected to be carried out until October.

Tan was confident that the completion of the project would help rid Johor Jaya of flash floods as some of the low lying areas were affected by floods at least four to five times a year.

“So far the government has spent over RM60mil to deepen and widen Sg Plentong, Sg Tebrau and Sg Pandan since 2010,” he said, adding that two years ago, Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman had personally visited the area during a major flood, which affected more than 1,500 families.

Tan added that Ghani had formed a special committee to look into the flood woes of the people in Johor Jaya.

“I hope that with this last project by MPJBT, the flood problem here will be over as the new drains will be able to accommodate more water from nearby housing estates such as Desa Tebrau and Mount Austin,” he said, urging the residents and motorists to be patient when Jalan Bakawali 91 is closed to make way for the project.

Tan added that the contractor has been directed to put up signs to divert traffic to other alternative routes including Jalan Bakawaki 13 and Jalan Bakawali 10.

He added the project in Jalan Ros Merah Utama, which would also take about one month, would be carried out after they carry out a study of the traffic situation, as it was a major road used by a lots of motorists daily.
