JOHOR BARU: Foon Yew High School along Stulang Laut here ceased classes for two days to celebrate its 99th anniversary with fun, food and games.
The school opened its gates to the public and its alumni to participate through out the festivities spread across two days on Aug 10 and Aug 11.
Colouful streamers decorated the school while classrooms were transformed into ‘cafes’ where desks and chair were covered with tablecloths for people to dine on.
Visitors were amused to find students dressed in blonde wigs, bright costumes and over-the-top make up, part of a Cosplay fashion show during the celebrations.
Accounts executive Loong Sheng Hao, 29, who visited the school with his friends, said he was found the Cosplay costumes quite convincing.
“It was fun trying to identify from which anime show the characters were from,” he said.
There were also makeshift stalls selling food and beverages, handicrafts, accessories and game stations at the carnival.
Form three student Jacalyn Tan Ying Xin, who was from the school’s Japanese Society, said she specially rented a blue kimono for the occasion.
“I love all things Japan so I decided to dress up in the Japanese traditional attire to join in the festivities,” she said, adding that the atmosphere at the school was like a “carnival”.
Another student Caroline Lee Jia Le, 18, spent the whole night before the celebrations with two other classmates to make mashed potatoes to be sold at the school bazaar.
“We feel proud that my school is now 99 years old and want to do our part in helping the school raise funds so we decided to sell some food during the fair.
“It was a fun process to peel the potatoes ourselves and learn how to mash them properly as I rarely help out in the kitchen before this,” she said with a laugh.
She added that she would surely return to the school’s future anniversary celebrations even after she graduates this year.
Besides food and games, there was also a tug-of-war contest, fashion shows, students dressed up in Disney character mascots and pottery classes for students and the public to enjoy.
