Think out of the box

Learn how to turn mundane mealtimes into a thrilling adventure via Disney Junior’s ‘For Grown-ups’ online resource centre.

DOES your young child watch telly all day? If so, then it’s time to introduce him to some hands-on activities, courtesy of Disneyjunior-asia.com, the website for the TV channel that targets two- to seven-year-olds.

Adults are welcome to visit the colourful site and can simply click on the “For Grown-ups” tab for some instant ideas, most recent of which are DIY character bento (or charaben) recipes fashioned after the channel’s flagship series Jake And The Never Land Pirates.

Ahoy, there: Prepare the basics and let your child have a go at decorating his own version of Jake’s Pirate Lunch.

The toddler-friendly programme follows the trail of swashbuckling trio Jake, Izzy and Cubby – pint-sized Neverland pirates whose adventures include finding treasure and fending off the likes of Captain Hook, his first mate Smee, and Tick-Tock the Crocodile.

Photo tutorials on the site will help you recreate pirate-themed meals straight out of the show, using simple ingredients like white rice, eggs, seaweed sheets, bits of meat and a handful of boiled vegetables.

Whip up a smiley Jake wrapped in a crabstick bandanna (Jake’s Pirate Lunch) or an omelette-infused charaben featuring the cartoon’s talking green parrot (Skully’s Snack Box). Prepare the basics, then let your child decorate his own meals – who knows, he may even be more creative in piecing Captain Hook together on a plate.

Here’s your chance to turn snow peas into sleek palm trees and zucchini slices into a fun hammock – wonderful yet simple concepts meant to tempt picky eaters into giving nutritious-but-boring fruits and vegetables another glance.

Parents planning for themed parties can look beyond the fantastical food guide to a host of other exciting ideas, some of which offer step-by-step instructions on how to produce Disney Princess party crowns and a 3D Handy Manny tool box to use as party giveaways. Check out Disneyjunior-asia.com for more fun, educational stuff to share with the whole family.

Jake And The Never Land Pirates, now in its second season, airs daily at 1pm and 7.30pm on Disney Junior (Astro Ch 613).
