Doctor saves her mum

IT was the fifth day of our six-day tour of Macau, Hong Kong, Zuhai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou. We had arrived at a shopping outlet, which was the last stop of another hectic day. All of us got ready to alight the bus. Seated behind me were Doctor and her mother, Madam. We heard Doctor calling her mother,”Mama, Mama,” several times. Thinking that it was Doctor’s son calling his grandmother, we did not pay attention.

But when the cry became louder and more urgent, we turned behind to see Madam slumped on her seat, unconscious. Doctor was trying to wake her up. Instinctly, Doctor felt Madam’s pulse and immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on her. At the same time she yelled out for someone to call the ambulance.

At one point, I thought Madam had stopped breathing. Doctor continued doing CPR in the bus as every second was crucial. Since the ambulance would take time to come, the China tour guide instructed the bus driver to drive to the hospital. However, the bus-driver was from another town and did not know the location of the hospital. Luckily one of the salespersons at the shopping outlet knew and off the bus went.

We had no mood to shop after this incident. Later the bus came back to pick us up for dinner. In the midst of our dinner, the China tour guide announced that Madam was hospitalised for further observation.

All of us heaved a sigh of relief that she was alive.

The Doctor’s quick response saved her mother`s life.
