KUALA LUMPUR: The KL International Junior Open squash championships received a massive boost when data and broadband service provider Redtone came on board as title sponsor yesterday.
The Dec 12-16 tournament, organised by the Squash Racquets Association of Federal Territories (SRAFT) is into its sixth year and has attracted a record 480 entries – making it the third biggest junior tournament in Asia.
The tournament, which is sanctioned by the Squash Racquets Association Malaysia (SRAM) and the Asian Squash Federation (ASF), will see boys and girls competing in six categories – Under-9, Under-11, Under-13, Under-15, Under-17 and Under-19.
“We are happy to be given the opportunity to be the title sponsor for this year’s tournament,” said Redtone chairman Datuk Wira Syed Ali Syed Abbas after announcing the RM100,000 sponsorship at a press conference at Berjaya Times Square Hotel yesterday.
“Squash is an excellent way to instill good habits, especially among the younger generation, and we hope the players will learn the importance of patience, discipline, hard work, perseverance and the ‘never-give-up’ attitude.
“Hopefully, this sponsorship will also help unite people from all walks of life in squash.”
Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek also lauded Redtone for the sponsorship and urged more private entities to get involved in local sports.
“This is a good progress and development for squash in Malaysia because it will help in the process of identifying the next Nicol David,” said Shabery.
“We have to appreciate the efforts of both SRAFT and Redtone in providing more platforms for the juniors.
“The ministry always encourages private corporations to get involved in sports, not just at the national and international level, but also at state and junior levels.”
Among the top national juniors who will be competing in the tournament are Asian Under-15 boys’ champion Ng Eain Yow and top girls Rachel Arnold and Vanessa Raj.
