RANTAU PANJANG: Families staying at flood relief centres nationwide will each receive RM500 to help reduce some of their financial burden caused by the floods, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
He added that he had instructed the State National Security Council to channel the aid quickly, as soon the victims return to their home after the flood receded.
“The Government, through the Agriculture and Agro Based Industries Ministry, is also thinking of providing assistance to farmers and domestic animal breeders for their loss of income as a result of the floods,” he said after visiting flood victims at flood relief centres at Gual Tinggi here yesterday.
Also present were Muhyiddin's wife Puan Sri Norainee Abdul Rahman and International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamad.
However, Muhyiddin, also the Umno deputy president, said the assistance provided for the farmers and breeders was not a compensation but to offset the losses incurred.
Muhyiddin advised flood victims to heed the advice of the authorities when evacuation orders were issued.
“Saving lives is the most important thing. Do not worry about personal belongings because the authorities will monitor the houses of the flood victims and ensure their belongings do not get looted,” said Muhyiddin.
He also expressed his appreciation to the relevant authorities and non-governmental organisations for providing assistance to help the flood victims in Kelantan.
On the flood situation, Muhyiddin said the number of flood victims at flood relief centres had dropped from 6,713 people (involving 2079 families) compared to 7,220 people (from 2,258 families) since Tuesday.
To a question, Muhyiddin said the suggestion to build bunds to mitigate the floods along Sungai Golok needed in-depth studies as it involved high costs.
