Honorary doctorate for atomic bomb survivor

GEORGE TOWN: Atomic bomb survivor Datuk Abdul Razak Abdul Hamid (pic) will be bestowed an honorary doctorate by his alma mater for his contribution in promoting ties between Japan and Malaysia.

Hiroshima University will send officials to Malaysia to present him with the degree next year.

Abdul Razak, 87, was unable to complete his studies in the university after the atomic bomb was dropped in Hiroshima on Aug 6, 1945, during the Second World War.

“I am very happy and grateful to be remembered by Hiroshima University and to be recognised by the Japanese people for my work in developing the relationship between Japan and Malaysia.

“This is especially so through the Look East Policy' that celebrated its 30th anniversary recently.

“I would like to thank the university for the honour and privilege, and I am looking forward to the occasion,” said Abdul Razak, who was a Universiti Teknologi Mara lecturer.

It was reported that Abdul Razak and two others former Brunei Prime Minister Pengiran Yusuf, 91, and former Indonesian Parliamentarian Hasan Rahaya, 91, would be given the honour by Hiroshima University.

The three were among a group of students from Japanese-occupied South-East Asia studying in the city during WW2.

According to the university, they were forced to stop their studies after the city was hit by the atomic bomb.

Sharing Abdul Razak's joy is his son Prof Tan Sri Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, who is Albukhary International University vice-chancellor.

“He is a very dedicated teacher and educator who has given much in imparting knowledge to his students,” said Prof Dzulkifli via e-mail.
