Another temple may be torn down

SEPANG: Another Hindu temple in Selangor is under threat of demolition and its committee is asking for the state-owned land adjacent to the structure.

The Sri Maha Mariamman temple in Sungai Pelek which the committee claims to be at least 130 years old faces the possibility of being torn down as the company that owns the nearly two-acre plot that houses the temple wants to take it back.

Temple committee chairman Vellasamy Rasu said they were hoping the state government could give them state-owned land next to the temple.

“We want to give that land to the company in exchange for leaving the current structure alone.”

He claimed, however, that there has been no news despite numerous letters and approaches to Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim and executive councillors Teresa Kok and Dr Xavier Jayakumar.

“We have sent letters since January this year and the only response we received was from the Mentri Besar that action would be taken. Until now, nothing has been done,” he said in a press conference at the temple yesterday.

The temple committee's adviser Tan Tuan Tat said there is nothing to stop the company from reclaiming its land.

“If the company wants to take back the land, where is this temple going to go?” he asked.

Vellasamy criticised the Pakatan Rakyat-led state government for allegedly not keeping to its word when campaigning during the March 2008 general election.

“They said they would not tear down any temples but after four years they have torn down four temples,'' he said.
