Hockey: Malaysia whip Oman for second win

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia continued their winning ways when they chalked up their second consecutive victory after thrashing Oman 4-1 in the Asian Champions Trophy at the Al Rayyan Hockey Stadium in Doha yesterday.

Malaysia, ranked fourth in Asia, were in complete control of the match from the start but it was Oman who scored first in the 16th minute through Salah Al Soodi.

But Malaysia came back strong.

After winning their first match 4-1 over Japan, Malaysia were in no mood for anything but a victory. It was all out attack and they finally got the equaliser in the 23rd minute from a Faizal Saari penalty corner.

Then on it was all Malaysia and they went further ahead when Mohd Radzie Abdul Rahim scored from a another penalty corner in the 28th minute.

Then in the second half, Radzie scored again in the 63rd minute and victory was completed when Mohd Fitri Saari thumped home from close range in the 65th minute.

National coach Paul Revington said: “We did not start very well at all. But when we went 1-0 down it was the wake up call we needed.

“Then on, it was all Malaysia. And I am happy with this result and all of us can take a good break tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, defending champions India registered back-to-back victories at the Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament after beating Japan 3-1 yesterday. They had earlier defeated China 4-0 on Thursday.

VR Raghunath yet again scored a brace as in-form India fought hard to post a win over a fighting Japan. On a hot day, India did not start too well as Japan were in control at the start of the game.

But India finally took the lead in the 22nd minute when VR Raghunath scored off a penalty corner. Japan, however, equalised through Koji Kayukawa in the 50th minute when they received a penalty stroke.

Favourites India regained the upper hand and then struck through Gurvinder Singh Chandi in the 52nd minute before Raghunath scoring his second in the 60th.
