Factory worker faces murder charge, claims trial for assault

GEORGE TOWN: A factory worker was charged in a magistrate’s court here with the murder of a sub-contractor near a temple.

S. Gangadharan, 31, was jointly charged with caddie L. Mahendrakumar and four other men, who are still at large, with the murder of K. Gobinathan, 32, near a temple in Island Park between 1am and 3.20am on May 30 last year.

The charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code carries the mandatory death sentence.

Gangadharan, who was arrested on Nov 27, was represented by counsel Harpal Singh.

Mahendrakumar had already been charged with a similar offence on June 24 last year.

Gangadharan also claimed trial to a another charge of assaulting M. Sumati, 21, at a house in Jalan S.P. Chelliah at 9.30am on Feb 13 last year.

The offence under Section 323 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 10 years, a fine not more than RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.

Magistrate B. Sripracha Nanthini fixed Jan 17 next year for mention of the cases.

In the same court, lorry driver Jonathan Charles Francis Xavier, 26, was charged with threatening Tan Boon Hooi, 52, by uttering the words “bawa parang dengan geng” (get the parang and gang).

He denied committing the offence in front of a shop in Lorong Ru 2, Bandar Baru Air Itam, at 12.10am on Nov 6.

The offence under Section 506 of the Penal Code carries a maximum jail sentence of two years, a fine or both.

Jonathan was also alleged to have assaulted Tan by kicking the latter’s left thigh at the same place and time.

The offence under Section 323 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 10 years, a fine not more than RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.

In asking for lower bail, his lawyer Jack Tang said Jonathan and his seven siblings were raised single-handedly by their mother.

“He is the sole provider in the family. He has a stable job and will not abscond,” he said.

Bail was set at RM3,500 and the cases were fixed to be mentioned on Feb 1 next year.
