THE spirit of Deepavali was in the air at the Grand Seasons Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, when deputy Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing minister Datuk M Saravanan and his wife, Datin V Kavitha, hosted an open house in conjunction with the festival.
More than 2,500 guests turned up dressed fashionably in Indian traditional costumes to celebrate the event.
Among the guests present were MIC president Datuk G. Palanivel, Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib, Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, former MIC president Datuk Seri S Samy Vellu, former MIC deputy president Datuk S Subramaniam, Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing secretary-general Datuk Adnan Md Ikshan and Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia Vijay K. Gokhale, among others. Also present were government officers, senior officials from various non-governmental organisations, members of the press and the public.
Guests were served with delicious and sumptuous Indian buffet spread much to their delight, apart from being entertained with Indian classical music by well-known local musicians.
Highlight of the event was the garlanding ceremony whereby Saravanan garlanded some of distinguised guests, which was followed by a cake-cutting ceremony.
