IPOH: The caregiver of a three-year-old girl is appealing to the child’s parents to take her back after they abandoned her three months ago.

K.S. Choong said the girl’s mother, Susan, first handed over the child, Dorothy Chong Mei Sum, to her at the Perak Toong Onn Woi Koon building here on Aug 9.

“I was not given any reason why Dorothy was left with me, but Susan, who is married to my nephew Chong Chee Leong, promised that the stay would not be long and she would give me RM1,000 each month to take care of Dorothy.

“However, Dorothy’s parents, both 33, only banked in the amount once into my bank account, and when I called them to pick up Dorothy, they kept delaying and finally stopped answering my calls and SMSes.

“The last I heard from Dorothy’s father was when he called her on Sept 13 to wish her happy birthday and told me that he was currently in Johor,” she said at a press conference here yesterday.

Choong, 52, said she lodged a police report over the matter on Sept 11 and was advised by the police to hand over Dorothy to the Welfare Department.

“If Dorothy’s parents do not show up in a week’s time, I will have no choice but to follow the advice given by the police as I am finding it very difficult to take care of her with each passing day.

“With me and my husband working, it is hard to find the time and money to take care of a young child, especially since the promised payment from her parents have not been coming in,” said the coffee shop worker.

Perak MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau chief Datuk Lee Kon Yin, who is assisting Choong, urged Dorothy’s parents to come back for her before Choong is forced to hand the girl over to the Welfare Department.
