KUALA LUMPUR: United States Ambassador Datuk Paul W. Jones was feeling extra nervous when news broke out that superstorm Sandy was tearing through New York.

His thoughts, as he watched the trail of destruction on cable TV here, were on his 83-year-old mother Evelyn, who lives alone at her home in Manhattan.

Power cables were crumbling and telephone lines disrupted as reports of severe damage in the Big Apple streamed in, and Jones feared the worst.

However, his prayers were answered his mother picked up his call.

“I was relieved to find out that she was all right. The power was knocked out but fortunately the telephone line was working.

“She told me that she was safe but the neighbour's tree had come crashing down,'' said the relieved envoy, who had grown up in that home.

Jones said his mother, who had visited him here in April last year, was a feisty woman who had the spirit of New Yorkers imbibed in her.

“She is a very fit woman who still plays tennis. So, I wasn't surprised to find out that she was already out and about the next day!

“My two elder sisters who live in California and Oregon also called to check on her . There were friends from Brazil and France who rang, too,'' he added.

Jones thanked the many Malaysians who had sent him comforting messages.
