Umno leader not keen on listing candidates early

ANNOUNCING the list of general election candidates might lead to internal sabotage in certain problematic areas, says Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Commenting on Barisan Nasional Youth’s call for the candidates to be announced early, Dr Ahmad Zahid said there were positive and negative effects of doing so.

“It might fine in areas with no problems but in other areas, it might lead to dissatisfaction among certain individuals.

“In such sensitive areas, the dissatisfied individuals might cause problems, thus leading to sabotaging the party,” he told pressmen.

He was speaking after attending a Kembara 1 Malaysia event at Universiti Kolej Bestari recently.

He explained that in problem areas, some individuals who were not listed as candidates might deem themselves winnable to begin with.

“The suggestion by Barisan Youth must take into account the suitability of the state or parliament seat being contested,” he said.

Barisan Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin had called for the list of candidates to be announced early.

Meanwhile, asked on PKR de-facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s call for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to contest the Marang parliament seat, Dr Ahmad Zahid, who is also Defence Minister, brushed the suggestion aside and described it as a political gimmick.

“Above all else, I feel he is trying to deflect the attention of the masses from the current problem faced by his daughter (Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah).

“His challenge to the Prime Minister makes no sense at all.

“It is nothing more than a diversion taction for his daughter’s benefit,” he said.

On Nurul Izzah’s controversial statement on freedom of religion, which caused quite a stir in recent days, Dr Ahmad Zahid urged to admit her mistake and not blame the media.

“Politics should be used to strengthen Islam in the country and not the other way around.

“Religion should never be politicised,” he said.
