KUALA LUMPUR: Operators of lorries and heavy vehicles will not be allowed to park their vehicles indiscriminately by the roadside or housing areas in the near future said Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Chor Chee Heung.
"New guidelines on the parking of heavy vehicles was passed by the Cabinet on Nov 9.
"It was agreed that all lorries and heavy vehicles will not be allowed to park indiscriminately in housing areas or locations deem unsuitable in the near future," he told Dewan Rakyat during his ministry's budget winding up speech at the committee stage on Monday.
He said the guidelines, drafted by the Town and Rural Planning Department, would be submitted to the ministry for approval soon.
Under the proposal, he said the private sector would be encouraged to set up special parking areas for heavy vehicles in specific locations for operators to park their vehicles.
"For operators who do not have their own depot, they will be able to park their vehicles in the designated parking areas," he said.
He noted the move was aimed at addressing indiscriminate parking of heavy vehicles, in particular in housing areas despite by-laws against it.
