KUALA LUMPUR: Citizens of 32 countries will automatically be eligible to convert their driving licence to a Malaysian driving licence, said Deputy Transport Minister Jelaing Mersat on Monday.
He said this was in line with the United Nations Conference on Road and Motor Transport, Geneva 1949 and 1968, in which all member countries recognised each other's driving licence.
"A total of 115 countries will not enjoy the automatic conversion under the convention and they will need to make a request to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) director," he said in reply to a supplementary question from Ahmad Kasim (PKR-Kuala Kedah) at the Dewan Rakyat.
Ahmad questioned the move to issue driving licences to foreign drivers as they were not well-versed with the country's laws.
Commenting further, Jelaing said among the reasons that applications to convert foreign driving licences were rejected was because they did not meet the requirements set by the JPJ.
These requirements involve visa and passport validity period, valid driving licence, a translation of the driving licence if it is not written in English, verification of the driving licence from the embassy of the issuing country or verfication from the licence's issuing authority, as well as completing the JPJ form with supporting documents including coloured photo.
"For the conversion, applications will be imposed an annual fee of RM30 for the licence and a processing fee of RM20," said Jelaing.
He added that JPJ records show that of 13,252 applications, 8,469 were approved between 2010 and Oct 30 this year.
The countries are Australia, Iraq, Papua New Guniea, Belgium, Italy, France, Holland, Japan, Poland Brunei, German, Russia, China, Korea, Spain, Denmark, Laos, Singapore, Fiji, Libya, Switzerland, Philippines, Mauritius, Thailand, Finland, Egypt, Turky, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Taiwan, Iran and Nigeria. - Bernama
