New Malaysia Hall in Perth

PASIR GUDANG: The Government has allocated RM30mil to build a third Malaysia Hall in Australia to cater for the growing number of local students there, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

The facility will be located in Perth, which will be the third Australian city to have a Malaysia Hall after Melbourne and Sydney.

The Malaysia hall in Perth will be quite useful to our students and parents who need temporary accommodation as it is costly to rent a place in the city,” he said at a mass circumcision programme held at Perjiranan 8 here yesterday.

Khaled said there were 18,000 Malaysian students in Australian universities and 3,000 were based in Perth.

He said the new Malaysia Hall in Perth would have 80 rooms and facilities such as a hall, surau, canteen and library.

When completed, it will serve as a place where Malaysian students arriving in Western Australia can stay before entering their respective universities.

Meanwhile, Bernama reports that the issuance and renewal of Malaysian passports in Australia will be moved from Canberra to Melbourne early next year.

This was announced by the Malaysian consul-general in Melbourne Dr Mohd Rameez Yahaya at the Malaysia-Singapore Lasallian dinner in Melbourne on Saturday.

There have been complaints for years that Malaysians had to travel to Canberra at great expense to renew or get new passports.

Since its opening here in June last year, the Malaysian consulate-general in Melbourne has taken over most of the consulate matters which were previously handled at the Malaysian High Commission in Canberra.

The Malaysian consulate in Perth would continue to keep its passport office, said Mohd Rameez.
