PM: Malaysia concerned over crisis in Gaza

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said Malaysia was deeply concerned by the escalating violence in Gaza.

“We call on both sides to refrain from further acts of violence, to ensure that no more lives are lost,” he said in his latest post on his 1Malaysia blog yesterday.

He said the events once more underlined the need for a Middle East peace process.

“We call on international power brokers to step in to help ensure enduring peace in the region,” he added.

Najib stressed that Malaysia was ready to lend assistance in any way possible.

In Yan, Kedah, Minister in Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom said Muslims in Malaysia should learn from Israel’s cruel and continuous oppression of the Palestinians, and stop fighting among themselves and unite.

A protest letter had also been sent by the Government condemning the act to the UN, asking it to take stern action against Israel.

In Kuala Lumpur, university students nationwide strongly condemned the continuing assaults and air strikes.

University of Malaya Students Representative Council chairman Izham Ismail said the heinous crimes and brutal acts of violence should cease, and strongly urged Najib to “go hand-in-hand” with other Muslim leaders in this agenda.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng urged the Government to lodge diplomatic protests over Israel’s cruel actions. — Bernama
