Durian fans are in for a treat

GEORGE TOWN: The December durian season, which occurs once every 12 years, is set to tantalise the taste buds of those who love the “king of fruits”.

As such, locals and visitors to the island will have more reason to usher in the year-end festivities at the state's annual Durian and Fruit Festival.

Organised by Penang Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, Rural Development and Flood Mitigation Committee, the festival will be at Anjung Indah in Jalan Tun Sardon, Balik Pulau, until Dec 31.

State exco member Law Choo Kiang said this year's durian season was unique.

“There are two durian seasons this year. The previous one was in the middle of the year.

“This season also coincides with the school holidays, so we expect to have more locals and tourists at the festival,” he said at the launch of the festival on Saturday.

A durian vendor at the festival said this was a minor season, with only one-third yield of the normal season.

Visitors can select their favourite durians at the stalls selling a variety of the fruits grown in Balik Pulau.

State Speaker Datuk Abdul Halim Hussein, who was at the launch, said his favourite durian was the Ang Heah and Hor Lor.

“The Ang Heah durian, grown on the island, tastes creamy, sweet and yet a bit salty. It must be because of the salty' wind that blows on the island,” he quipped.

Norsida Ahmad, 30, travelled from Bukit Mertajam for the thorny fruits.

“Even my two-year-old daughter likes durian,” she said.

The festival is open from 10am to 9pm. For details, call 04-2620862.
