Kevin out to defend his first title

LAS VEGAS: American Kevin Na will be seeking to defend his first title as the PGA Tour’s Fall Series begins this week at the TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas.

In 2011, Na shot four rounds in the 60s en route to a two-shot victory over Nick Watney, of the US.

It marked Na’s first win in 211 PGA Tour starts. Both players are in the field this week along with several other top American players.

“It’s pretty cool to walk in and see your picture up on the wall. It’s a great feeling,” Na said.

“I get a chance to defend this week. I haven’t been able to defend any of my Nationwide Tour victories because the year after I couldn’t make it, but this is the first time I am getting a chance to defend so I’m excited.

“I’m playing okay right now. The last few months toward the end season my putter kind of went cold. I actually started driving the ball better this year, and that was my main focus.

“I think because of that I didn’t spend much time on the putter and it kind of got cold.

“Recently it’s been coming back a little bit. Hopefully this week it’ll get hot. You need to make a lot of putts out here because the scores are low.”

US Ryder Cup captain Davis Love, Fiji’s Vijay Singh, JB Holmes, Ricky Barnes and Stewart Cink are among those trying to unseat Na, who finished with a 261 total last year to set a 72-hole scoring record.

Love, who is fresh off a disappointing Ryder Cup loss on Sunday with the American team, won this event in 1993.

“I wanted to get back to playing golf, no matter what happened on Sunday,” Love said. “I had committed that I needed to get back to my own game and it would be good for me either way.”

This is the first of four events in the Fall Series, as players battle to get inside the top 125 on the money list in order to retain their Tour card for next season.

The PGA Tour heads to California next week for the Frys.com Open, where Bryce Molder defeated Briny Baird in a playoff. — AFP
