Thai Ariya is best amateur finisher

KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn was the best amateur finisher in the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia after finishing tied ninth with Candie Kung of Taiwan, Lizette Salas of the US and Japanese sisters Ai and Mika Miyazato.

Ariya fired a two-under 69 for the fourth round and ended up with a total of 277. Ariya is one of the eight sponsor’s invite for the tournament.

She is the third ranked amateur in the world ranking and the top Thai player. She had a flawless round with two birdies in the sixth and 15th holes and played the rest on even par.

Her previous rounds saw her scoring 69 for the first round and a one-over 72 for the second. Then in the third round she rebounded with a 67 and finally ended the tournament on a 69. Ariya said that she had achieved her target of making it into the top 10.

“It was a good field out there and I was happy with my scoring. I played a bogey free round just like the first round. So that was a good effort. I had wanted to finish among the top 10 here. I am glad to have achieved it,” she said.

Ariya will go back taking in the experience of having matched the top players and would feel more confident in bid to become a professional at the end of the year. Her plan is to qualify for the European Tour and play on a regular basis next year against the top stars.

A total of five amateurs took part in the tournament. Taiwan’s Cheng Ssu-chia was placed 54th position while Malaysians Aretha Pan and Sarfina Vinotha were 61st and 68th.

Taiwanese amateur Min Lee was disqualified in the second round.
