Whopper of a grouper

GEORGE TOWN: It weighed a whopping 168kg. That's a whopper of a potato grouper caught off Teluk Bahang on Thursday.

And when it was put up for sale at Cecil Street Market, it attracted curious stares. Some even lined up to be photographed with the fish known as loong tan in Chinese.

Fishmonger Tan Kah Seng, 44, said it was the biggest catch he'd seen in his 20 years doing business at the market. The previous big grouper weighed 162kg in 2007.

Tan and friends had set out to sea at 10pm Thursday when the grouper landed in his net.

The fish was sold to a fish head restaurant for nearly RM8,000 or RM45 per kg.

The potato grouper is a large and important predator. They also help to maintain the health of a reef by picking off weak fish.
