Libyan embassy closed

PETALING JAYA: The Libyan embassy in Malaysia has closed indefinitely with the imminent collapse of the 42-year old Gaddafi regime.

A Libyan Embassy security officer said the embassy staff had moved to an undisclosed hostel and had not come in to work yesterday.

“There was a lot of activity last Friday as the staff came in to sort out some stuff, but they haven't been back since. They also replaced the Libyan flag in the embassy.

“The ambassador left the country earlier,” he said.

An embassy staff member who only wanted to be identified as Muhammad said the closure was for the coming Hari Raya celebrations.

“We will be closed from Aug 22 to 26, but should reopen by next week,” he said.

With rebels surrounding Muammar Gaddafi's headquarters, his son Seif al-Islam captured and reports of government fighters retreating, the six-month-old battle for control of Libya appears to be in its final stages.

Meanwhile, a Ranhill Bhd official said the company had not sent its staff back to Libya as it was still monitoring the situation in the country.

The property developer had evacuated more than 2,000 of its employees, of which 78 are Malaysians, in March when fighting first broke out between rebels and the pro-Gaddafi forces.
