Probe papers on Sarbani’s death handed to MACC complaints panel

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has submitted the internal investigation papers on the death of Selangor Customs Department assistant director Ahmad Sarbani Mohamed to the commission’s complaints committee.

MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abu Kassim Mohamed said the commission would wait for the next course of action on the advice of the committee.

“The report will not be made public,” he said after attending the closing ceremony of a training programme for 14 anti-corruption officers from Bhutan here yesterday.

Ahmad Sarbani was among those detained by MACC on April 1 during a graft probe involving Customs officers who allegedly caused the Government to lose RM2.2bil in under-declared taxes.

Ahmad Sarbani was found dead on the first floor of the MACC office in Jalan Cochrane here on April 6.

He had been released on bail but went to the MACC building, apparently to change his statement.

Meanwhile, the police have filed an application for an inquest into Sarbani’s death.

Police officer Supt R. Munusamy, who is in charge at the court complex here, said the police filed the application and Ahmad Sarbani’s sudden death report at the court registry at about 3pm yesterday.

He added that more details on the inquest would be disclosed on Monday.

It was reported on Thursday that Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail had agreed to the suggestion by the police to hold an inquest.

On another matter, Abu Kassim said the Home Ministry should investigate whether there were elements of corruption in the supply of over a million MyKad chips, which were later found to be faulty as reported by The Star on Monday.
