Cops: Sarbani died because of fall

KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor Customs Department assistant director Ahmad Sarbani Mohamed died due to severe head injuries consistent with a fall from a tall building.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Zulkifli Abdullah said investigations into the death were in the final stages and were progressing well.

“We are waiting for a few minor reports before handing the papers to the Attorney-General's Chambers early next week.

“We have also recorded statements from 44 people, including Ahmad Sarbani's family members, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) staff as well as those from the Customs Department,” he said at the Astaka in Taman Tasik Titiwangsa yesterday.

He added that the investigations were being conducted jointly by the police, Chemistry Department and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre.

Ahmad Sarbani was among those detained on April 1 during a nationwide graft probe by MACC. He was released on bail but went to the MACC building on April 6, apparently to change his earlier statement.

However, he was found dead on the badminton court on the first floor of the building in Jalan Cochrane, Kuala Lumpur.
