Royal honours for sports officials, coaches and athletes

A TOTAL of 83 sports administrators, officials and athletes have been bestowed honours by Sultan Tuanku Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah of Kedah in conjunction with his 83rd birthday celebrations this year.

They were honoured at staggered ceremonies held at the Istana Anak Bukit, Alor Setar since the investiture ceremony began on Jan 16.

The latest batch of recipients included managers, coaches, co-ordinators and athletes involved in 22 sports in the 2010 Malaysia Games (Sukma) last year.

This is the first time such a large number of sports personalities have been awarded royal honours in a single year.

Earlier on the first day of the investiture, Kedah Sports Council chairman Dr Hamdan Mohd Muthalib received the Datuk Setia DiRaja Kedah (DSDK) award which carries the title of Datuk. He is also the secretary of the Kedah Football Association (KFA).

Another personality honoured was Badminton World Federation (BWF) Finance Committee chairman, Badminton Association of Malaysia treasurer and Kedah Badminton Association life president Datuk Lim Teong Kiat who was appointed a Justice of Peace (JP).

Kedah badminton coach from Indonesia Samidiono Slamat Hadi Sumarto who has been coaching Kedah players for eight years was among 24 people who received the Bintang Kebaktian Masyarakat Kedah (BKM).

A total of 16 people received the Pingat Jasa Kebaktian (PJK).

Thirty others including Malaysia Games chef-de-mission Datuk Khazali Haji Din received the Ahli Gemilang Semangat Jerai Kedah (ASK) and 14 athletes received the Bintang Semangat Jerai (BSJ).

Samidiono who led Kedah to three successive team titles in the Ma- laysia Games (2006, 2008 and 2010) is the first foreigner to get a state award.

Two badminton players Lim Khim Wah and Chong Wei Fong received the sports award of Ahli Gemilang Semangat Jerai Kedah (ASK).

Teenager Sivasangari Subramaniam, 12, who became the first Kedah squash player to qualify for the semi-finals of the prestigious British Open Junior squash championships in Sheffield, England, and who won the Hong Kong Open Under-13 title last year was bestowed the Bintang Semangat Jerai (BSJ).
