Najib: Govt won’t allow power grab by violent means

MIRI: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has given a warning to extremists against attempting to usurp power by bringing down the Government through violent means.

The Prime Minister made it clear that the Government would not allow “copycat attempts” to bring down the federal or the Sarawak governments via actions similar to what is being witnessed in Egypt now.

“Currently, there are demonstrations and activities to bring down the government by force in certain countries. Don’t think that what is happening in these countries must also happen in Malaysia or Sarawak.

“These things need not happen here. We (the Government) will not allow them to happen here,” he added.

Najib said the Government had always abided by the belief that the people were supreme.

“The rakyat have been given the freedom to choose the government of their choice.

“There is no need to usurp power. We will stop any attempt to bring such troubles into Malaysia or Sarawak,” he said in his address during the national-level Chinese New Year open house hosted by Miri City on Sunday night.

Najib said he had to make it clear that peace, equality, harmony and unity must be paramount in Malaysia.

The Government was working very hard to ensure that all levels of society, in both urban and rural areas, were given equal chances to progress, and that was why unity and harmony must be preserved at all costs, he added.

“Everyone of us are stakeholders in this country. Don’t gamble the future away by following the instigations of certain people,” he said.
