I AM watching with great interest the implementation of the MRT system in Kuala Lumpur as this project will help many working people in the Klang Valley who now battle daily traffic jams.
This project will also initiate high-end property development in many areas along the corridor, thus putting the country on course to a high income economy.
As the first line is more or less already decided, the second and third lines, we were told, are still on the drawing board.
I certainly agree that KL needs a circle line just like in most other big cities around the world.
However, I am proposing that priority be given to the third line i.e. from Port Klang to Kuala Lumpur as indicated by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and chief executive of Pemandu Datuk Seri Idris Jala – “All eyes and ears on second MRT” (The Star, Jan 31).
This line should be constructed concurrently with the second or first line to alleviate the traffic jams that occur daily along the Federal Highway.
The line that will start from Port Klang shall have stations at Klang Town, I-City, UiTM, Pusat Bandar Shah Alam, Shah Alam Football Stadium, Subang Parade/SS15 Subang Jaya, Sunway Pyramid Bandar Sunway, PJ City Centre at Taman Medan, Taman Sentosa Old Klang Road, Pantai Hill Park/Bangsar South, Eco City/Mid Valley Megamall, KL Sentral, Stadium Merdeka/Bangunan Wawasan PNB, Bukit Bintang and ends at KLCC or further. From KLCC it can be extended to other parts of Kuala Lumpur.
The above stations are located in ‘hot spot’ areas. The car park at the stadium can be fully utilised under the park and ride system. A reasonable parking fee will encourage motorists to leave their cars at home, particularly those who stay in Shah Alam.
I am optimistic that many developers who have properties near the stations will come forward to co-develop the stations.
This will accelerate the development of the MRT and financially reduce the burden on the Government.
More Grade A offices will come up in Petaling Jaya, Bandar Sunway, Subang Jaya and Shah Alam. This corridor has the highest density of working population who commute daily using the Federal Highway.
Multi-national companies need not put their regional offices in the Golden Triangle as they can now set up offices in Shah Alam or Subang Jaya while their expatriate staff can stay in the condominium in the Golden Triangle.
