Teacher allegedly hurled racist, vulgar remarks at students

GEORGE TOWN: A teacher allegedly hurled racial slurs and vulgar words at his students for not wearing complete traditional outfits during a pre-National Day celebration at a school in Bukit Jambul here.

The teacher, in his 30s, had allegedly made derogatory ethnic remarks at the students on Thursday.

The students were said to have mixed-and-matched their jibba, kurta and cheongsam with jeans, instead of complete traditional outfits for the celebration.

State education department director Ibrahim Mohamad, when met at the launching of Readathon 2010 at SK Convent Green Lane, said Monday the teacher had since been issued with a letter of reminder over his action.

“The school has also warned him not to repeat his action,” he told reporters after launching the event.

He added that the school had also arranged a meeting involving the teacher, the parent-teacher association and parents of the students concerned to resolve the issue.

Ibrahim said initial investigations found that the teacher was merely advising the students, about five of them, to wear proper outfits instead of coming out with a contemporary' one.

“But some of the students retorted in a bad manner. That's when the teacher blew his top and started with the scolding.

“But still, the words used were inappropriate,” he said.

Such an incident in schools is the third case to be reported this month.

Allegations of racism against the principals of SM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra in Kulai, Johor, and SMK Bukit Selambau in Kedah were reported recently.
