PETALING JAYA: Diver Pandelela Rinong completed her Youth Olympic campaign on a high by taking the girls’ 3m springboard silver medal at the Tao Payoh Swimming Complex last night.
Pandelela, however, had to fight hard to nail a second silver medal in the inaugural Games with four other divers in the final keeping up the pressure until the final dive.
Pandelela only had a marginal lead of five points after the third and penultimate dive. But she managed a clean entry to garner 67.50 points to secure the silver on 444.15 ahead of Ukrainian Potyekhina Viktoriya (433.55).
China’s national champion and Asian Youth Games winner Liu Jiao stamped her mark with a classy display to complete a double after taking the 10m platform two days ago. Liu Jiao was the only one to break the 500-point barrier with a final tally of 511.35.
Pandelela had qualified for the final in second spot behind the Chinese after completing 12 dives in the preliminary rounds.
After bagging the 10m platform silver medal on Saturday, Pandelela, who was nursing a stiff neck, will be delighted to add to Malaysia’s medal count.
Chef-de-mission Alex Lim Keng Liat, said that Pandelela showed great fighting spirit to prevail in a world-class competition.
“The standards in diving were high because the current up-and-coming divers were all here,” he said.
“The Chinese diver was too good tonight but Pandelela put up a good show to get her second medal. It’s a bonus for her and the country as we were expecting one medal.”
With three days of the Games remaining, there is unlikely to be any more medals for Malaysia.
The sailors were back in competition after a two-day rest yesterday and Khairuneeta Afendy have to make up a lot of ground. She is in ninth place after completing eight races in the girls’ one-person dinghy.
Amirul Shafiq Jais fared worse, slipping to 18th place in the boys’ event.
Rhythmic gymnast Lee Wan Nin will be the last Malaysian to see action when she competes in qualification for individual all-around.
