PAGE hands in second memorandum

PUTRAJAYA: The Parent Action Group for Education (PAGE), which is campaigning for Science and Mathematics to be taught in English, handed over a second memorandum to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak yesterday.

The memorandum was handed to an officer at the Prime Minister’s office by PAGE chairman Datin Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim.

She said the memorandum, among others, suggested that the teaching of the two subjects in English could be offered as an option for students in 2012.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced last year that the policy of Teaching of Mathematics and Science in English (known by its Malay acronym, PPSMI) would be scrapped from 2012.

Students in national schools will revert to learning the two subjects in Bahasa Malaysia, while vernacular schools will teach them in their respective mother tongues.

Noor Azimah said that besides the memorandum to the Prime Minister, the group had also written three times to Muhyiddin, who is Education Minister, but had yet to receive any response.

The memorandum stated that the research reports used to support the reversion of the policy were not entirely valid, as well as addressing concerns that the policy is unconstitutional.

“This memorandum is different because it includes the High Court decision (on May 7, 2010) that the PPSMI policy is not unconstitutional,” said Noor Azimah.
