More than 800 cyclists sign up for LIMBC 2010

PETALING JAYA: More than 800 cyclists have signed up for the inaugural TM-Langkawi International Mountain Bike Challenge (LIMBC 2010) to be held from Aug 6-8.

Event organiser Datuk Malik Mydin said the event was designed to provide the hard-core professional mountain bike racers and social riders a platform to test their endurance, speed and skill in a real racing environment.

“Our aim is to provide a platform for all cyclists to share a common ground and with the hope of creating a new cycling culture in Malaysia,” said Malik, stressing that even national riders like Mohd Azizul Hasni Awang and Annuar Manan began their cycling career as mountain bikers.

Malik, who is chief executive officer of Human Voyage (M) Sdn Bhd, said two Dutch professional cyclists would be among the 130 foreigners from Australia, Germany, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Malik, who is also the first Malaysian to successfully swim across the English Channel in 2003, said the track for the 4.3km Olympic Cross Country and 8.5km Endurance races would offer riders a myriad of technical and physical challenges.

“There are many steep terrains, drops and streams that the cyclists will have to encounter in both events,’’ he said.

The Olympic Cross Country challenge will start and end at Kampung Tok Senik while the Endurance Challenge will start and finish at Telaga Harbour Park.

Prizes totalling RM250,000 will be up for grabs. Telekom Malaysia Bhd are the title sponsors of the event.
