Malaysia to send 13 athletes to Youth Olympics

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will be represented by 13 athletes in six sports at the inaugural Youth Olympics, which will be held in Singapore from Aug 14-26.

The contingent of seven male and six female athletes will be involved in aquatics (diving and swimming), athletics, badminton, rhythmic gymnastics, sailing and weightlifting.

The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary general, Datuk Sieh Kok Chi, said yesterday: “We will only compete in individual events and all our athletes qualified on merit.

Our hope: Ooi Tze Liang will be taking part in the Youth Olympics in Singapore next month.

“It is an inaugural Games for the Under-17 athletes and we are not setting any targets for our contingent. But we can expect the badminton players to return with medals.”

Former national swimmer Alex Lim, a three-time Olympian, is the chef-de-mission of the contingent.
