IT was the desire to cure the sick that prompted J. Thaneswaran to study medicine.
The 18-year-old said his inspiration to become a doctor came after a family member became ill when he was little.
“From that day, I made up my mind to become a doctor so that I can help cure the sick. I also believe it is our responsibility to serve the people based on humanitarian grounds,” he said after being awarded SMK Sultan Yussuf’s 2010 Curriculum Personality Award at the school’s speech day in Batu Gajah last Saturday.
Thaneswaran, who had scored 10As in last year’s SPM examination, received the award from the Raja Muda of Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah.
He also received a gift from the school as recognition for his achievement.
Thaneswaran, who is currently studying A-Levels in Medicine at the International Education Centre of Universiti Teknologi Mara in Shah Alam, said he would be going to Ireland in 2010 on a Public Services Department scholarship.
“I am really looking forward to going there to study medicine so that I can come back to serve the country.
“I have made a promise to myself to put all efforts to fulfil my dreams of becoming a doctor,” he said.
At the function, Raja Dr Nazrin also presented scrolls to 81 other students who did well in their Form Four, Lower Six, PMR, SPM and STPM examinations.
