Voluntary firefighter hurt in morning blaze

A VOLUNTEER fireman who was helping to put out a fire at a factory at the Free Trade Zone (FTZ) in Bayan Lepas, Penang, suffered cuts on his right hand during the incident.

Bayan Baru Fire and Rescue Services station chief Supt Abdul Rahim Ismail said shattered glass cut the hand of the fireman, who did not wish to be named, while he was putting out the fire at the factory at Phase 3 of the FTZ.

The factory manufactures printed circuit boards used in consumer electronic devices.

Abdul Rahim said the station was alerted about the fire at 8.48am and 27 firemen in six engines from three fire stations in Bayan Baru, Jalan Perak and Paya Terubong arrived at the scene at 8.55am.

“We managed to bring the fire under control within 20 minutes with the assistance of 15 firemen from two voluntary fire fighting units from Paya Terubong and Seri Tanjung.

“The fire was on the first floor of the two-storey store building belonging to the factory. When we arrived at the scene, there were several workers on the first floor which is a store-cum-production line.

“They managed to evacuate the building and no one was hurt in the fire,” he said.

Abdul Rahim said the firemen had to break glass windows to get into the first floor to put out the fire, adding that the cause of the fire was still under investigations and the loss had yet to be determined.

It is learnt that the store building is under Phase Two of the factory’s expansion which is due to open next month.

A worker from a neighbouring factory, who did not want to be named, said he saw smoke from the building while on his way to work yesterday morning.

“I alerted some of my colleagues and together with our company’s Emergency Response Team, we came out here to help out,” he said.
