Miss Venezuela crowned Miss Tourism Intercontinental in Miri

MIRI: A young actress from Venezuela has won the prestigious Miss Tourism Intercontinental 2010 title at the beauty contest's world grand final held here.

Myriam Janeth Abreu Medfina, 22, the beauty queen from Venezuela beat 32 other beauties from all over the world and was crowned by Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan at the Miri indoor Stadium late on Thursday night.

This beauty contest is the third most prestigious beauty pageant in the world after Miss Universe and Miss World.

The first runner-up was Miss Australia, Kelly Louise Maguire followed by Miss America, Amy Diaz as the second runner-up.

The ''Best Evening Gown'' title went to Leslie Ines Quezada Bueno from Mexico whereas Miss Netherlands, Djamila Celina Mercherts won the ''Best National Costume'' title.

Miss Malaysia, Darcia Marselynna took home the subsidiary title of '' Miss Congeniality. The ''Best Talent'' title went to Miss Germany, Klaudia Domagalska.

''This event is important for Miri and for Sarawak, not just the pleasure of watching these charming contestants but also to demonstrate our respect and admiration for other cultures and traditions, for Malaysians and also to the whole world,'' said Chan during his opening speech.

Chan also thanked the effort by the tourism authorities, Miri City Council, local business community and the Miri people for their generous support for this splendid event.

Some 5,000 people packed the Indoor Stadium to see the beauties.

The beauty contest, brought here by Aleric Soh's production company, was jointly organised by the state and local tourism authorities and various sponsors.
