Sultan won’t be attending Perkasa gathering

SHAH ALAM: The Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has decided not to attend Perkasa’s inaugural national gathering on March 27.

This is because the Ruler does not wish the royal presence to be manipulated by unscrupulous quarters, Sultan Sharafuddin’s private secretary Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani said.

Mohamad Munir said Sultan Sharafuddin did not want his presence to be misconstrued as lending support to the politician as this could cause political controversy.

Several Selangor Royal Council members also shared the Sultan’s view that the Ruler should not attend the event at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, he told a press conference at Istana Bukit Kayangan here yesterday.

“We have to make it clear that in a letter dated Feb 1, the Sultan had agreed to attend the assembly. But due to the current political situation, the decision had changed,” he said.

Mohamad Munir said Sultan Sharafuddin was concerned that his decision not to attend the gathering might be misconstrued.

“Ibrahim is not to be blamed for printing invitation cards announcing the Sultan’s attendance as he had acted based on the Feb 1 letter,” he said.

Mohamad Munir said the Sultan hoped the assembly would go on smoothly and that Perkasa would evolve into a non-governmental organisation with integrity to protect the Royal Institution, Malay rights and the status of bumiputras and Islam as the official religion of the nation.

Perkasa was formed after the March 2008 general election as a pressure group led by Pasir Mas’s independent MP Datuk Ibrahim Ali.
