ALOR SETAR: The number of flood evacuees in Kedah has reached 40,212 people with several new areas here hit by floods, including Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak’s house at Jalan Sultanah.

Azizan, when met after chairing a meeting with federal and state government agencies said 140 relief centres have been opened in Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena and Padang Terap districts.

He said that new areas in Kota Setar that were hit by flood are Taman Uda, Lorong Bayu, Taman PKNK and Taman Rakyat.

“The cause of these areas being hit by flood is partly due to the electrified double tracking project run by MMC Gamuda. The drainage system built by the company is too small and cannot channel the water into the river.

“We have asked the company to solve the problem quickly or we would ask the state Drainage and Irrigation Department to do it,” he said.

Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung who visited the flood-hit areas, said the project had prevented and blocked the floodwaters from flowing back into the river.
