Story on Penang as a global trading point

THE public can learn more about Penang as a global trading point prior to Malaysia’s Independence in the first lecture of the Penang Story Lecture Series by the Penang Heritage Trust (PHT) and Think City Sdn Bhd.

The lecture will be delivered by Emeritus Prof Wang Gungwu, a notable academic on Chinese history and the Chinese diaspora from 11.30am to 1pm on Saturday at City Bayview Hotel’s Sri Emas Ballroom. It is titled Sino-Western Penang Responses.

PHT president Khoo Salma Nasution said the lecture, to be delivered in English with a mix of Chinese, would focus on Penang’s history “as it moves into the early phase of globalisation”.

“The lecture will present Penang on a global scale before Indepen-dence where cultures and communities had converged on the island due to ongoing international trade at the island’s port,” she said.

She said the lecture would focus on why notable Chinese personalities such as Dr Sun Yat Sen chose Penang as his base of operations.

“Prof Wang will also lecture on how Western culture met with Chinese culture in a larger scale and the ensuing trends,” Khoo told a press conference yester-day.

After the press conference, philanthropist Khor Wooi Seong presented a RM100,000 mock cheque to PHT which is organising the 22nd Joint Conference of the Sun Yat Sen and Soong Ching Ling Memorials.

The lecture will coincide with the joint conference. Entry is free but seats are limited. The public can call Think City (04-2226955) or PHT (04-2642631) for details.

The lecture series is a key theme of the Penang Story, a cultural mapping project relaunched recently under the George Town Grants Programme.
