Students can now get 50% discount on rail tickets

KUALA LUMPUR: Local students aged 13 and above can now obtain the Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) 50 percent discount card for long-distance travel from all KTMB stations.

The free discount card announced by the prime minister in the 2010 Budget to assist students, was available at KTMB from Monday.

"The issuance of the discount card is subject to certain conditions and it is only for second class and economy class travel," KTMB Intercity Services marketing manager Mohd Noordin Kimi told Bernama.

He said secondary school students, students of public and private higher learning institutions, and part-time or long distance-learning students could apply for the discount card.

However, students in teacher training, nursing, police and armed forces colleges and health institutes need to pay for the card, at RM30 annually.

The card can also be used during the festive seasons but booking for a trip must be made seven days before the trip.

Mohd Noordin said students, however, needed not worry about getting tickets as KTMB would always increase the number of coaches during the high-demand periods.

According to him, the government had approved an allocation of RM4mil annually to offset the loss in revenue for KTMB.

"Previously, we were issuing student concession cards at RM30 each annually but we have withdrawn them, so KTMB has lost revenue from there," he explained.

He also reminded the public that KTMB was the sole authority issuing the discount card, and a lost card could be replaced by paying a fee of RM10. Mohd Noordin said with the discount card, students were allowed to buy only one ticket each time and if the card was being used by someone else, the cardholder would have to pay a penalty of RM30 besides the train ticket.

The card can be obtained within a day from the KTMB office at KL Sentral and within three days from other KTMB offices.
