IPOH: For the last 15 years, three neighbours have been spending each Ramadan making rempeyek – the ever-popular crunchy flour crackers with kacang and ikan bilis.
With just the radio on and each other for company, the three women fry an average of 1,000 pieces of the delicacy each day.
Pisah Arshad, 55, said she and her two neighbours would chit-chat as they make rempeyek.
“It helps us pass the time. It takes time to fry the rempeyek as it can only be done over a slow fire,” Pisah said at her home in Tanjung Rambutan here.
By the time Hari Raya Aidilfitri arrives, Pisah, Manisiah Mustafa, 67, and Azizah Zakaria, 55, would have made about 20,000 pieces of rempeyek and 100,000 pieces of kuih bahulu.
“We also bake kuih bahulu starting at 6am after prayers and we finish at noon,” said Pisah.
She said their customers were individuals and traders who buy their products at RM18 per 100 pieces.
