KUANTAN: Kuantan Medical Centre (KMC) is expanding its operations with a new hospital in Indera Mahkota to meet the growing demand for quality healthcare in the east coast region.
TDM Berhad chairman Senator Datuk Roslan Awang Chik said upon its completion in 2012, the RM100mil hospital will have 150 beds.
Roslan said it would also house a state-of-the-art cardiothoracic centre to offer professional care for patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases.
“The centre is the first such facility to be built by a private hospital in the east coast region.
“Our brand of no-frills healthcare is growing in Kuantan and the existing premises in Jalan Tun Ismail 9 is getting congested.
“We need to grow further to meet the increasing demand for quality healthcare and medical services in line with the higher standard of living in the state,” he said after witnessing the signing of a sale and purchase agreement between KMC and Far East Holdings Berhad here recently.
Also present were TDM chief executive officer Badrul Hisham Mahari, KMC chairman Rohani Abdullah, KMC medical director Prof Dr Mokhtar Awang, Far East Holdings chairman Kamaruddin Mohammed and its executive director Nowawi Abdul Rahman.
Under the agreement, KMC will purchase 4.3ha of land from Far East Holdings for RM13.96mil.
The ground-breaking ceremony of the project is scheduled to be held early next year.
Roslan said the new hospital would be able to cater to the needs of those living in Kuantan and Pahang, as well as in neighbouring states.
He said TDM aimed to become a major player in healthcare industry in the east coast region.
“We are not into health tourism as we want everybody to be able to afford a personalised treatment from a private specialist hospital,” he said.
Rohani in her speech said that when KMC started its operations in 1997, it had only 20 beds. After more than a decade, we now have 84 beds inclusive of three intensive care unit beds and 18 consultants.
“In addition, we also provide 10 beds for day-care treatment,” she said.
Rohani added that healthcare was one of the most important criteria in a country’s development.
KMC is a member of TDM group of hospitals. The others are Kelana Jaya Medical Centre and Kuala Terengganu Specialist Hospital.
TDM Berhad is listed on Bursa Malaysia with its core business operation in plantation, healthcare and food industries.
