Altantuya murder: Calm despite death sentence

SHAH ALAM: Chief Inspector Azilah Hadri and Corporal Sirul Azhar Umar were stoic and composed when High Court judge Datuk Mohd Zaki Md Yassin sentenced them both to hang for the murder of Mongolian national Altantuya Shaariibuu.

Several members of their families visibly flinched in High Court Three when the judgement was read to them Thursday morning.

But they were calm even though some quietly wept and consoled each other when Mohd Zaki left his courtroom immediately after meting out sentences to the two Special Action Force (UTK) officers.

Journalists were barred at first from speaking to their families and told to exit from the courtroom.

However, later Azilah’s financee Nur Azila Baharuddin, 32 told reporters that he was calm through out the court’s proceedings.

“He didn’t say anything. He was calm, he wasn’t angry, didn’t cry ... just calm,” she said.

When was asked whether they believed that the court’s decision contained any political elements, she said no.

“That is the decision. We will accept it. We still hold that we are not wrong but this is the decision and we will see what develops next,” she said.

She added that she and Sirul were putting their marriage plans on hold. They were engaged in 2006 after having met in 2004.

Nur Azila said that she and his family still visited him every Saturday at the Sungai Buloh prison where he has been held for the duration of the trial.
