PUTRAJAYA: Former Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop has described his new role in the Economic Planning Unit (EPU) as important in realising the 1Malaysia concept.
“I accept the challenges and responsibilities that come with the post with high spirits and commitment,” the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said in a statement here yesterday.
“The EPU plays an important role in realising the 1Malaysia concept and in achieving Vision 2020. The restructuring, upgrading and transformation of the country’s economy must continue to be implemented so that it can be developed into a country that we all dream of.
“Strategic and comprehensive planning is needed to make our wish to improve the living quality of people from all walks of life come true,” he said.
Datuk Seri Mohd Nazri Aziz, who was retained as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of legal affairs and Parliament, said: “I really have no comment. I have served under three Prime Ministers now. Why don’t you ask the new ministers?”
Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek used the analogy of a football game to describe his re-designation from Information Minister to Youth and Sports Minister in the new Cabinet.
“Politics is like a football game. You can be repositioned by your manager to midfield, defence or be on the bench.
“If you are a midfielder and your boss says he wants you to take on an attacking role as a forward you have to take it,” said Ahmad Shabery, who regarded his new appointment as that of a frontline role.
“I have a new challenging task. It is not merely about our sports winning many medals or about active youth associations. I have an important task to regain the confidence of the youth in the Government,” he s aid.
Asked if he was surprised at the appointment as he was one of the ministers said to be dropped, Ahmad Shabery said he was prepared for anything after Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi stepped down.
