The Bidayuh community to showcase their culture and traditions through event

KUCHING: Sarawak’s Bidayuh community will hold the first-ever ‘Berumuh’ festival to showcase their culture, traditions and progress at the end of this month.

‘Berumuh’ means farming in Bidayuh and is synonymous with padi planting.

However, as the community modernised over the years, ‘berumuh’ also came to mean gaining education and knowledge, said the festival’s organising chairman Datuk Wilson Baya Dandot.

“That is why the theme of the festival is ‘From the paddy field to the knowledge farm’ to reflect our progress,” he said at a press conference here on Monday.

Baya, who is also State Secretary, said the festival would be a suitable addition to the state’s tourism calendar.

“It brings the Bidayuh community together to display our cultural and arts heritage,” he added.

The festival will take place at the Serian Mini Stadium near here from March 20 to 22.

Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud is expected to launch the festival on March 21.

Events lined up for the festival include an exhibition of Bidayuh artifacts and traditional lifestyle, cultural performances, traditional games and cooking demonstrations of Bidayuh dishes.

There will also be a Battle of the Bands, a Bidayuh song competition and a ‘Dayung Timungun’ beauty pageant.
